Sen Ben Ayade who oversees the affairs of Cross River State is proposing stricter measures to curb the spate of kidnappings inflicting his domain–the death penalty for abductors and their ilk.

And he isn’t even kidding.

Ayade has sent an executive bill to the state House of Assembly seeking the death penalty for convicted kidnappers in the state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, the governor is also seeking, through the bill, to empower the state to seize any property belonging to convicted kidnappers and other criminals.

He is also seeking rewards for citizens who provide credible information to security agencies on the activities of criminals and their subsequent arrest.

The statement read, “The Governor has sent an Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly, seeking the death penalty for convicted kidnappers in the State.

“The bill also seeks to empower the state to seize property belonging to convicted kidnappers and other criminals in the State, even as it offers rewards to citizens who offer credible information to security agencies on activities of criminals.”

Cross River State has been battling a kidnapping problem of late. A senior resident pastor of the Winners Chapel in Calabar, Mr. Seyi Adekunle, was recently abducted at gunpoint during fellowship.

Ayade says for a State that prides itself on its ambiance and tourism credentials, getting rid of the kidnappers has become top on his scale of preference.
