Marilyn Ogar, the spokesperson of the Department of State Security has been demoted in one of newly appointed director general, Lawal Musa Daura’s first acts of office.
She was however, not the only officer demoted. All officers promoted in a controversial exercise which took place towards the end of former president Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure also saw their promotions reversed.
The promotion reversal was contained in a circular dated July 3 and signed by Toma Minti on behalf of Mr Daura.
“In view of the observed lapses in the promotion exercise release from 31st March, 2015 to date, the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has directed its suspension forthwith,” the circular read in part.
According to the circular, the personnel affected include those promoted, converted and upgraded within the period under review. They have been instructed to revert to their former ranks with immediate effect.
The exercise, which took place nationwide was understood to have been done by the last administration as a reward for their ‘loyalty,’ and a significant proportion of those promoted were officials attached to the presidential villa.
Marilyn Ogar has generally been perceived as a divisive figure, and has been criticised for statements she has made which have been considered by many as overtly partisan for an agency whose avowed stance is non-partisanship.
