Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu assumes the Group Managing Director (GMD) position in the state run Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with a lot to do.
A Harvard trained Lawyer, Kachikwu took over the NNPC reins from Joseph Darwa on Tuesday.
Sources in the corridors of power have told Ekekeee that President Muhammadu Buhari drummed it into the ears of his new hire that he expects the opaque and financially reckless corporation completely cleaned up, before his announcement was made public.
Kachikwu had beat three other candidates to nick the job, reports say. President Buhari settled for Kachikwu not only because he found his curriculum vitae impressive, but also because he came highly recommended by oil industry players.
Kachikwu worked as an Investment Attorney in the United States; was General Counsel with Texaco Upstream and Downstream in Nigeria; was Executive Vice Chairman of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited; and was also General Counsel for ExxonMobil Nigeria affiliate Upstream and Downstream Companies in Nigeria.
Buhari assured Kachikwu that he wouldn’t be interfering with his job as long as they both stay on the same page.
The President thereafter tasked the new NNPC Boss with:
1. Making sure all the nation’s refineries operate at optimal levels and are periodically maintained as and when due.
2. Ensuring that the NNPC is completely restructured in such a way that it delivers on set goals and objectives.
3. Recovering all stolen oil proceeds by previous administrations and plugging leakage loopholes.
4. Ridding the NNPC of corrupt elements and ensuring transparency in the oil sector henceforth.
Kachikwu holds a First Class degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the Nigerian Law School. He also obtained a Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Law from the Harvard Law School in the United States.
He’s also a romantic; with his publishing firm, True Tales Publications being behind the once widely read Hints Magazine which was such a hit among adults and young adults alike in the ’90s. He also publishes the Hello Nigeria and Complete Fashion glossy magazines.
Millennials and baby boomers will remember his column, ‘Fatherhood with Ibe’–one of the well received columns in the popular Hints Magazine before the publication was rested–with plenty of nostalgia.
