The general consensus from the Tanzania-Nigeria encounter which took place last Saturday, was that Nigeria was lucky to return home with a share of the spoils as the Taifa stars were the better side all game.
It took the heroics of debutante Carl Ikeme in goal for the Super Eagles to prevent Nigeria from certain defeat.
Freckle-faced Eagles gaffer, Sunday Oliseh, agrees.
“Carl was fantastic for us. He was brilliant as he kept the Tanzanian strikers at bay. It was a very important debut for him and thankfully for us he was very fantastic,” said Oliseh.
Oliseh also admitted that his midfield was out of sorts; with Haruna Lukman hauled out before the half-time whistle, after a performance to forget.
“There was no connect between the midfield and the forward. That was why we were not prolific in the vital area to get the desired result. Anyway, like I said, we only trained together for two days so we are going to correct whatever flaw noticed here before our subsequent matches. Thank God we have a friendly against Niger Republic in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
“Our midfield was not covered properly that is why I decided to do some early changes but I don’t want to point at any players,” observed Oliseh in apparent reference to the listless displays of Lukman Haruna and Izunna Ugochukwu in the middle of the pack.
Oliseh pleaded for patience from Nigerians as he is rebuilding the team. “This is a new team which we are rebuilding from the scratch. Our doors are still open for other good players. We are certainly going to get it right,” he concluded.
They’d berra.
