Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano opened the prison gates for 25 inmates from three prisons on Friday.
Obiano said he was only exercising his prerogative of mercy after the prison comptroller announced that the 25 inmates had been reformed and are willing to live better lives out of jail.
It was a gesture to commemorate Nigeria’s 55th independence anniversary.
The Governor also handed the freed prisoners one million naira each to commence their rehabilitation outside of the prison walls.
Some of the freed shed tears of joy and expressed appreciation to the Governor for giving them another chance at life.
