It all began as an anti-climax when minority leader Godswill Akpabio cited order 43 and declared that the opposition PDP senators wouldn’t be asking Rotimi Amaechi any questions until they had looked at the report of the ethics committee which had just been tendered on the floor.

From that point, it was evident that former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi would have an easy ride on the floor of the senate.

There was a moment of rowdiness on the floor but dissenting voices soon gave way to the Amaechi show.

He laughed his way through all the questions posed his way and famously declared: “If there’s anyone who hates corruption, that person is me. The panel did not indict me”, he said, holding aloft the panel report enclosed in a white envelope and asking for permission to have it tendered.

He also said on another occasion; “I have never taken or offered bribe and I never had police escort as governor”.

20 minutes after being asked questions bordering on the Niger Delta, revenue allocation, the Governors’ forum among others, Senate President Bukola Saraki asked for the permission of his colleagues to let Amaechi take an honorable leave. And he was gone.

At the time of filing this, the second nominee to be screened today, Heineken Lokpobiri had been asked to take a bow and go in keeping with senate tradition. Lokpobiri is a former senator.

Next is Prof Omoyele Daramola from Ondo State.
