President Muhammadu Buhari is feting his ministers-designate at a retreat inside the bowels of the Transcorp in Abuja. The retreat began on Wednesday like we had reported and is being held under the theme: “Delivering Change: From Precepts to Practice”.
The retreat would end on Friday and has been portrayed as a very low key one. All the recently confirmed 36 ministers are in attendance and here’s an overview of what the president has told them so far:
1. Always reach me through my Chief of Staff
Being chummy with the president isn’t a guarantee that you’ll have to pass work related matters directly to him. Buhari told his ministerial picks to always use the office of his chief of staff as official communication channel in line with the spirit of the presidential system of government.
2. Fighting corruption and plugging economic drainpipes are still dear to the president
The country’s number one citizen told his new team members that they’ll all join hands with him to fight corruption, solve unemployment problems, diversify the economy and tackle insecurity. In other words, getting an economy in dire straits up and running again is top on the agenda once they are all sworn in.
3. No waste here, please
The president reminded his ministers-designate that they’ll be coming into government at a time of global slump in the price of oil and they’ll be inheriting a treasury that has been left bare at the seams. Frugality will be the watchword going forward, the C-in-C reiterated.
4. Team work is everything
Buhari asked the ministers-designate to consider themselves privileged to be called to service from among some 180 million Nigerians and charged them to work as a team to deliver the administration’s campaign promises to the people.

The retreat is expected to herald the formal inauguration of the cabinet and the handing of portfolios to a clutch of the men and women who’ve signed up to the ‘change’ administration.
