Chile U-17 top scorer, Victor Osimhen says he’s only interested in winning the trophy today

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen is the leading scorer at the ongoing Under-17 world cup in Chile with nine goals to his name.

Last Friday, the Ultimate Strikers of Lagos goal machine equaled the long-standing record of nine goals in a single tournament jointly held by Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle and the Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly, who were top scorers at Trinidad & Tobago 2001 and Mexico 2011, respectively.

If he gets his name on the score-sheet in the final game today (Sunday) when Nigeria takes on Mali for the top prize, Osimhen would have effectively broken the record of the highest number of goals scored by a single player at this level.

But he’s shrugged off suggestions he has his eyes on the record books.

“The most important thing is for us to win the trophy on Sunday and that would be the greatest achievement for us,” said the player, who has scored in every game at the World Cup in Chile.

“I’m happy that I was able to match the record set by others in the  past but that was never my ambition here.”

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday spoke to the Nigerian players and officials via Skype, asking them to do it for the country.
