Just so we are clear, Alhaji Yahaya Bello is the man who polled second in the APC primary which produced the late Abubakar Audu as Kogi governorship standard bearer. News have made the rounds for days now that the APC has settled for him as the party’s flag-bearer for the rescheduled Kogi supplementary elections.
Hon. James Abiodun Faleke was Abubakar Audu’s running mate until a week ago when the latter passed away before the election in which he was winning, was declared “inconclusive” by the electoral umpire. He has stressed in three letters (at the last count) that the APC Kogi governorship ticket is his, that he should be pronounced winner by INEC–a re-run or not–and that if anyone should benefit from Audu’s death, it should be him who criss-crossed the Kogi landscape, soliciting for votes with Audu.
The APC had announced it was holding a meeting today to decide its way out of this logjam. Except that before party executives and officials arrived for the meeting, Abiodun Faleke and Yahaya Bello’s supporters had a clash of wits.
Stones, clubs and sticks were fair game as they chanted the names of the contenders respectively to declare their preference. Most persons around the APC secretariat in Abuja, cowered in fear and the tension was palpable.
It took the reinforcement of policemen to restore some sanity to the meeting venue as they chased the restive sets of supporters away. The meeting to decide who should be handed the APC ticket for the December 5 governorship race in Kogi is still underway.
Spare some thought as well, will you, for Mohammed Audu’s supporters who want their man to be handed the ticket. He is the late Audu’s son whose supporters barricaded most of Kogi on Saturday, erecting bonfires on major roads and chasing everyone away.
