A sportswear company which printed labels on sportswear telling owners to‘give this shirt to a woman’ to wash it has apologised.
Indonesian firm Salvo Sports sparked a wave of criticism on International Women’s Day, of all days, over the sexist instructions’
Washing instructions printed on the shirts of top-flight Indonesian Super League side Pusamania Borneo said: ‘Washing instructions: Give this shirt to a woman. It’s her job
But after a barrage of criticism, it claimed not to have meant any offence.

#SalvoSports providing washing instructions isn’t MY job it is yours (probably even by legal decree) thanx for making sure I’m #NotBuyingIt — Elisande (@ElisandeWalters) March 9, 2015
A posting on the company’s Twitter account said: ‘The message is simply, instead of washing it in the wrong way, you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable’
And the sportswear firm stated, ‘There is no intention to humiliate women. In contrast, we want to tell the men learn from women how to take care of clothes’
“There is no intention to humiliate women. In contrast [we want to tell the men] learn from women how to take care of clothes.
“Not all men understand/know how to take care of their own clothes, women are more knowledgeable/experts on such matters. We apologise profusely for any misinterpretations.”
But not everyone was impressed with the apology either.
#Marketingfail: If you’re going to apologise make sure it’s genuine. #salvosports http://t.co/8B0Oz3bMNK
