Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has tendered an unreserved apology to a soccer-mad Nigerian public after his charges fell to the Guineans by a lone goal.
That defeat meant the Eagles are out of the African championship for home-based stars on the continent.
It will be Oliseh’s first failure at a tournament since he signed the dotted lines as Nigeria’s gaffer.
“We apologize to Nigerians for this loss; we never planned to exit the tournament this early. The boys gave their best,” Oliseh was quoted as saying on the official twitter handle of the Super Eagles.
There were reports that the Eagles have been badly treated by the Nigeria Football Federation since the tournament kicked off. Age-long problems of non-payment of camping and match bonuses have been rife.
Oliseh may have confirmed the stories before the game with Guinea when he told journalists covering the championship holding in Rwanda that “to be honest with you (even though) I am not going to go into details, my boys have been working under extreme duress ever since we got here”.
He continued: “I personally feel like we are driving a car with an empty petrol tank.
“I will not go into details so for that reason, I know that this is just another (bit of) difficulty that we have to surmount.
“That notwithstanding, the boys are human beings and let’s just hope we don’t break,” he said.
It looked like they finally did break at the hands of the Syli Stars of Guinea.
