Former defense minister Musiliu Obanikoro and his sons have been linked with receiving an illicit N4.75bn sum from former NSA Sambo Dasuki, earmarked for the purchase of arms.
Obanikoro has also been recently named in fresh allegations of being a protagonist in the rigging of the 2014 Ekiti governorship election on orders from former president Goodluck Jonathan.
However, Obanikoro has been holed up in Oglethorpe University in Georgia, United States, where he is reportedly studying history. He’s been issuing denials and statements from his U.S base. His sons are also based in the United States.
But the APC publicity secretary in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, has advised the Obanikoros to return home to clear their family name or face the embarrassment of a forceful extradition.
The APC spokesperson said Nigeria had an extradition treaty with the US, adding that President Barack Obama had even promised to assist Nigeria in fighting corruption, reports Punch.
He therefore argued that even if the Obanikoros did not come back of their own volition, the US government could repatriate them.
Igbokwe, therefore, warned that it was better for the Obanikoros to come back to Nigeria honourably than to be disgraced.
Igbokwe said, “I advise the Obanikoro family to come back and prove that they have nothing to do with these allegations. They must come to clear their family name. It is important that they do this because the money that we are talking about is too huge for them to just brush aside.
“Issuing statements is not enough especially when there is evidence that cannot be ignored. So, they better come back because if they don’t, America, which has promised to support us, will extradite them.”
