At the resumed sitting of the code of conduct tribunal today in the case of senate president Bukola Saraki Vs the federal government, one of the senate president’s counsels, Paul Erokoro, said Saraki was richer than the federal government of Nigeria before he became governor of Kwara State.
He said his client had therefore no reason to steal as governor.
“You agree that the defendant was worth about N4bn, $22m, 12 million Euros and 2 million pounds before he became governor”, Erokoro said.
Erokoro made the stunning remarks as he cross-examined Michael Wetkas, a detective with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Saraki is facing trial for a 13-count charge of false declaration of assets while serving as governor of Kwara State.
EFCC counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, however objected to Erokoro’s remarks, saying being rich doesn’t preclude one from stealing and acquiring more.
