Just days after militants who go by the name Niger Delta Avengers blew up Chevron’s oil installation in the delta, yet another explosion rocked Chevron’s Makaraba installation on Friday.
It will be the second time the Makaraba oil pipeline has come under attack.
Chevron’s Okan offshore pipeline was targeted by militants last week, cutting down Nigeria’s crude production levels and impacting negatively on the electricity sector.
Reports suggest that this latest explosion has everything to do with contractors hiring militants to wreak havoc.
One unnamed source told Punch newspaper: “There was a blast at well 10 around Makaraba. We may not be able to ascertain the time because those areas have already been shut down as a result of the Okan blast.
“As a result of this, they are not producing. You can recall that they also blew up the Otunana/ Abiteye line before. So, they are not producing.
“But the information available to us now is that some of the contractors repairing the pipelines are using some boys to destroy more of the lines so that they’ll have more points to work on when they eventually commence repair works.
“This is because for the boys, the servicing companies pay them like N5m to N6m for each vandalised point to be repaired,” the source added.
