58 military officers have been compulsorily retired from the army; among them some of the aides who served and watched ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s back.

Ojogbane Adegbe, a colonel and former ADC to Jonathan, and Mustapha Onoiveta, former ADC to Yar’Adua, were both retired.

Also retired were Nicholas Achinze, a colonel and former military assistant to General Owoye Azazi and Sambo Dasuki, a retired colonel.

Dasuki was national security adviser under Jonathan and billions of dollars earmarked to equip the military, allegedly disappeared under his watch.

Army spokesperson, Colonel Sani Usman attributed the latest purge to “service exigencies”.

“It should be recalled that not too long ago some officers were investigated for being partisan during the 2015 general election,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

“Similarly, the investigation by the Presidential Committee investigating defence contracts revealed a lot. Some officers have already been arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).‎”

Usman said there was no need to “read this out of context”, adding that “the military must remain apolitical and professional at all times”.

Below are some of the officers affected by the exercise:
