President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his resolve to rescue the Chibok schoolgirls unharmed.
More than 200 schoolgirls from the rustic Borno community remain unfound since April 2014; when they were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists from their dark school dormitory in the dead of the night.
A few commandeered their own escape soon after and two more were recently rescued, but the majority are still being held by terrorists, amid growing concerns that they have been splintered and married off.
Breaking the Ramadan fast with members of the diplomatic corps in Abuja on Thursday night, the president said rescuing the girls alive and unharmed remains his priority.
“We are not letting up on our efforts to rescue the Chibok girls, our priority is to rescue them unharmed”, he said.
The president also expressed regret that activities of the Boko Haram sect has rendered many Nigerians orphaned and homeless, saying “our main focus is to ensure their safe return to their homes and rehabilitate their communities”.
The president also bemoaned the renewed militancy in the Niger Delta region, reassuring the diplomatic corps that the issue was being tackled.
“No amount of militancy shall distract us from engaging with the region,” he assured.
He said his administration remains committed to addressing the issues of unemployment, poor infrastructure and ecological problems, saying “Our doors are open for business”.
