The Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden has expressed his government’s and country’s support for the electronic reforms being put in place by INEC ahead of the general elections in Nigeria.
Biden was on the phone with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday to relay his support of the card readers which the President’s party (PDP) has railed against. Ethnic militias ostensibly sponsored by the PDP have also been protesting against the use of the card readers while calling for the sack of INEC boss Attahiru Jega as a consequence.
A statement from the US Embassy alluding to the phone conversation read that the Vice President “expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational.”
