Online newspaper, Sahara Reporters acquired a new feather of infamy during Friday’s inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari when it pretty much ambushed Zimbabwean President and African Union chairman, Robert Mugabe, greeting his arrival at the Eagle Square venue with heckling. The video has generated mixed reactions.
For some, the online platform did well by harassing the president who has ruled Zimbabwe since its independence in 1980, but for a lot of others, Sahara Reporters crossed an ethical line, especially since they present themselves as journalists.
Zimbabwe’s minister of information, Jonathan Moyo, in reacting to the incident, described the reporters as “brothers and sisters of Boko Haram”.
“If Nigerian journalism has come to this, then God help Nigeria since nobody has monopoly over such uncouth misconduct. It is a sad tale of a man biting a dog when journalists make [the] news they should be covering,” Moyo said.
“Free countries have rules, including diplomatic courtesy, not the display of Boko Haram journalism. Of course, those are human beings, but are they journalists or Boko Haram?” asked Moyo.
Here is a video of the incident.
