The people of Balewa in Bauchi State have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to endorse the bid of their representative, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a compensation for the support they gave the President during the March 28 presidential election.
Balewa’s key claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Nigeria’s first executive leader after Independence, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.
In a statement in Jos, the Plateau capital, on Sunday, Dogara’s constituents said since they supported the President’s emergence, the only way he could show his ‘gratitude’ was to ensure that their representative emerged as the leader of the lower house of Nigeria’s federal legislature.
The statement, signed by the spokesman of the community, Mr. Yusuf Tafawa Balewa, and made available to journalists, said Dogara had served his people and the country meritoriously and should be rewarded with a higher national responsibility.
“With the recent victory of the All Progressives Congress at the polls, the race for the leadership of the National Assembly has been on the front burner with the characteristic intrigues.
“One of the contenders for the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives is our very own Hon. Yakubu Dogara, representing our constituency, Dass/Tafawa Balewa/Bogoro.
“Having been our representative for the past eight years we can authoritatively say that he has been a very dependable and visionary leader, comparable only to the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who incidentally hails from the same constituency.
“His exemplary leadership within and outside the constituency is highly commendable, he was one of the leaders to lead the people of Bauchi State into the APC. He has initiated countless of programmes and people-oriented policies for his constituents.”
According to the statement, Dogara’s leadership quality are so stellar that he is the first representative to be elected for a second and third term in the constituency, hence, “it will be a colossal mistake on the part of the APC not to cash in on this charismatic, detribalised, visionary, peace-loving and intellectual Nigerian.”
“We therefore recommend him for higher national assignment, believing he can translate his vision, skills and intellectual powers to assist our President in achieving the desired change we crave for it in this country while we continue to pray alongside other Nigerians for his victory as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives,” the statement ended.
