In what may come across to some as a stunning development, the Peoples Democratic Party has adopted Senator Bukola Saraki as its candidate for Senate President.
The PDP also threw a spanner into the wheel by adopting Yakubu Dogara for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The party, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in Abuja this morning at 1:50am, therefore urged its senators and reps to act accordingly by voting for these two men.
What makes these twin developments interesting is that both men were not adopted by the All Progressives Congress, the ruling party having picked Senator Ahmed Lawan for the top job at the upper house as well as Femi Gbajabiamila for Speaker.
Federal lawmakers are set to elect their principal officers in Abuja, Tuesday.
The Punch notes that the then opposition APC had refused to vote Mrs. Mulikat Akande for the Speakership in the last House of Representatives but joined angry PDP members to rally support for Aminu Tambuwal, who eventually nailed the top job at the lower house.
In a uniquely Nigerian twist of fate, Tambuwal later defected to the APC where he won the Sokoto governorship.
