The paramount ruler of the Eggon people, His Royal Majesty Bala Angbazo, has stripped former information and defence minister, Mr Labaran Maku, of his traditional title of ‘Turakin Eggon’.
The near unprecedented move was announced in a letter signed by the secretary to the traditional council, Mr Christopher Alaku, and made available to journalists in Lafia, the state capital.
Strangely, the letter offered no explanation as to why Maku – a native of what is the largest ethnic group in the state – was stripped.
Sources say however, that it had to do with a perceived disrespect shown by Maku in the buildup to the 2015 elections.
A council of elders was formed to mediate between governorship aspirants of Eggon extraction with a view to fielding a consensus candidate.
The elders endorsed Senator Solomon Ewuga, but Maku – who ended up as the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate – did not accept their choice.
On the day Ewuga was being presented to the elders at the Eggon Community Secondary School, Maku held a parallel rally at Endehu.
Fast forward to Tuesday, August 4, and Maku joined the rather weird but still exclusive club of former traditional title holders.
