Nigerians have been understandably agitated since news broke that senators would be returning to the classroom to learn how to use Facebook.
The Facebook team led by the African Head of Public Policy, will be in Nigeria this weekend ahead of the training slated for Monday.
“Senators and their aides will receive training on use of Facebook in line with the promise of the President of the Senate to ensure more representative legislature using e-parliamentary tools. This is a partnership between the Office of the Senate President and Facebook”, announced Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate, Sen. Isa Galaudu on Thursday in Abuja.
Eyebrows have been raised regarding who’s footing the bill of the travel expenses of the visiting Facebook team, training and logistic costs, etc, given the country’s precarious finances at this time, but Senate President Bukola Saraki has said Nigerians need not worry.
“Facebook offered to train Senators and their aides ABSOLUTELY FREE on how to effectively use the platform. I approved”, Saraki said in a tweet via his personal account.
He added that “Facebook Inc is covering their cost of flying to Nigeria”.
On the rationale behind the training, the senate president said: “We have seen fake accounts created to disguise as Senators to defraud Nigerians. This will allow for verification and effective use.
“Use of social media platforms have allowed me to get feedback I will ordinarily not have gotten. I’m also aware of impersonating accounts”.
