The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slated January 9, 2016 for the conclusion of the Bayelsa governorship election which was declared inconclusive earlier this month.

Southern Ijaw was the outstanding local government in the vote tally and the PDP’s Seriake Dickson was besting his closest challenger Timipre Sylva of the APC with more than 25,000 votes before the ballot was declared inconclusive.

To arrive at a new date to conclude the election, INEC met with stakeholders in the process–political parties, candidates and affected communities.

Participants at the meeting re-affirmed their commitment to the Peace Accord signed by all contestants and political parties at the Peace Summit held in Yenagoa on Tuesday, November 11, for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the State.

INEC has also announced that all other polling units affected in the cancellation, would have their elections conducted on the same date.

The Southern Ijaw election was cancelled on December 7 following reports of widespread violence, ballot box snatching and kidnap of electoral officers.
