The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air doesn’t exactly have his sights set on the White House.
Will Smith clarified his comments about a potential bid for the presidency at the premiere of his new movie Concussion in New York City on Wednesday.
“I was really kind of joking when I said that,” the 47-year-old actor and musician explained toEntertainment Tonight.
Speculation gained steam after Smith’s interview with CBS Sunday Morning aired over the weekend. In the midst of promoting his new movie Concussion, out Christmas Day, the conversation turned to politics.
“If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about walls and Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena,” he said, alluding to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s controversial remarks.
He later added, “I mean, I gotta be the president. What else would I run for? Come on!”
Smith also expressed interest in running for office in November, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “As I look at the political landscape, I think that there might be a future out there for me. They might need me out there.”
However, fans are more likely to see Smith on a concert tour than the campaign trail in coming months. He got a warm up for his new album and tour with Jazzy Jeff when he took center stage at the Latin Grammy Awards in November.
