Cameroonian social media is having an angry moment. The reason? President Paul Biya and members of his cabinet appeared in a photograph purportedly showing him at the state burial for 39 soldiers killed by Boko Haram members.
The problem is that the photograph was digitally enhanced , or in other words, photoshopped. The image surfaced online on Monday.
Biya, who traveled to Switzerland that day, did not attend the funeral but someone in his team photo-shopped him into one of the funeral photos and posted it on their website.
Cameroonians, already angry that Mr Biya didn’t honor the soldiers with his presence, have been enraged by the photograph and have taken to social media to vent their frustrations.
Here are some tweets from a Reuters West Africa correspondent, Bate Felix.
It was already insulting that #Cameroon President #Biya did not attend the ceremony honouring 39 soldiers who died fighting #BokoHaram 1/3

It was even more outrageous that someone in #Biya‘s team thought it would be brilliant to photoshop him into it 2/3 pic.twitter.com/xy2GxAbKYx

The crude photoshop cause enough outrage and outcry, forcing the presidency to remove the picture. #fail 3/3 pic.twitter.com/IJQlMm1mMz

And to the reason why Biya is not in the country?
#Biya is actually in Europe (Switzerland) on a short “private visit” which could last several weeks @sideraotieno https://t.co/XmxONnl3Ti

And there was a crass comparison to his Nigerian colleague, President Goodluck Jonathan.
@BateFelix @ChetoManji Perhaps Biya receives PR advice from the same source as Jonathan.
